Bikies,

Actually, Soglin is an avid cyclist and I have seen him on rides to Paoli as
recently as a year or two ago. Soglin was the first to start building bike
paths in Madison, the law park path being an example, and other bike
infrastructure. That said, there are things he has done and said regarding
bikes that I have disagreed with but the same is true of Mayor Dave. Also
on Soglin's blog is criticism of pedestrian islands on Glenway that don't
allow enough space for a bike and car to pass the islands simultaneously, a
criticism I share. (Note: Mike Rewey & I were able to persuade
Transportation Engineering not to put an island at the intersection of the
SW path and Glenway because the island would not have been wide enough for a
bicycle and would have prevented using the painted area in the middle of the
road as a bike left turn lane). I think a better way to approach Soglin on
winter biking is to reach out and try to educate him on the issue.
