My feeling is that if folks vary from the book's instructions, they are somewhat on their own. Sure we'll help if they write in to the -support list, but not following the book means you should know what you're doing, notwithstanding the fact that some packages will unexpectedly behave poorly. More than anything it would set a dangerous precedent if we started including information about what could happen if you don't follow the book. To me, that would stimulate a never-ending cycle of "well I did this, and it didn't work, so could you add this to the book?".
