Hi Nimer,

That's not good! I think that a hard drive whether internal or
external should have a longer life than 1-1/2 or 2 years.

You did not mention the size of your failed Hitachi hard drive. I do
think that the larger hard drives have the tendency to fail sooner
than smaller ones.

As I have mentioned, my Western Digital internal hard drive was 500
GB. and it failed within two years. I was told that the master file
table which I believe keeps track of all the files on the hard drive
was corrupted. Since I had many, many MP3 files on that old hard
drive, I(I don't remember how many) it was probably too many for the
master file table to keep up with it.

I was told that the solution with large single hard drives is to
split the hard drives into two drives. This could be done before any
data is stored on a new hard drive using a function in Window to
split the hard drive (I think it has to do with formatting). If data
is already stored on the hard drive, then you need something like
partition magic to split the hard drive.

The advantage of splitting a hard drive (so I was told) is that it
will create two master file tables which should handles the large
number of files spread over the two areas.

I have two external hard drives and one internal hard drive and all
are 500 GB. each. So, the three are split to prevent failure. Each
one has its own drive letter and each is split about 250 GB. each.

I hope that this information is useful for you.

Lennie
