For what it's worth, I move my laptop between work, MediaOne at home, and another 
cable modem
provider up in Maine just using the "ifconfig" command - because it lets you fake the 
MAC address:
 /sbin/ifconfig eth0 hw ether a1b2c3d4e5f6
I think the success of this depends on the device driver; I use a Xircom PCMCIA card, 
with the
pcmcia-cs driver that came with RedHat.
