awk, sed, and a mish-mash of useful 
functionality converging into Perl
would be a counter-example.

The fear seems to be that Perl 6 will
FORK from Perl 5 (diverge).

I think that Perl 6 will EXPAND perl 5.

Sure, you'll have to learn some new
syntactical stuff, but Perl 5 will
only have a subset of the functionality
that will be in perl 6.
