Hi Brian and all. I certainly understand the need for regular cleaning. It is just a little perplexing because I had my unit cleaned and checked out last August and the one pin which always stays up just a bit started acting up not long after. In fact, it was right after I upgraded to Keysoft 7.5. The other 2 pins started sticking just a bit about 5 or 6 weeks ago I guess. What I'm getting at is that it wasn't that long ago the display was cleaned so I don't understand why now 3 different pins are sticking. I am pretty careful about my BN and my display. I use it all the time though so it definitely gets a workout. This is the first braille display of any kind I have ever had so I don't know what the norm is. Do regular braille displays which you attach to a computer have to be cleaned and serviced at least once a year also?

Thank you all for your advice.
Nikki B.

Subject: RE: [Braillenote] Cleaning The Braille Display Question

Dear Nikki and list:

I'm not a hardware tech, but I sort of think pins get stuck in
the up or semi-up position from tiny particles of skin or dust or
grime somehow getting lodged under them.

If you hold your BrailleNote upside down while exercising the
Braille display, you may get lucky and dislodge the evil particle
and your pins may work as good as new.

However if a couple of say 10-15 minute Braille display exercises
upside down, right side up etc., don't remedy the problem, its
time to telephone Humanware Tech Support to request an RMA number
to send your BN in for cleaning and a general check-up.

One Braille terminal manufacturer in England used an
electro-mechanical Braille display, not piezoelectric like most
other firms use. They greatly increased the mean time between
display cleanings by installing a light fabric cover over their
display pins.

It worked to prevent finger oil, skin particles, dust and so on
getting into the mechanism, but they used metal display pins and
the pins wore a certain amount moving up and down in their holes.

So even with the cloth cover, their displays had to be cleaned
about once a year.

Take care and good luck.

Brian
