My initial suggestion would be to try to reload KeySoft into ROM, as
described below. Failing that, you will doubtless need to send your unit
into HumanWare for repair.

To successfully complete this process, you will need:
* A Secure Digital (SD) card, of any size from 64 MB to 512 MB
* A computer
* An SD Card reader

Note: the instructions below assume that the computer used runs Microsoft
Windows. If this is not the case, please adapt them accordingly.

WARNING!: carrying out this process will perminently destroy the existing
contents of the SD card used. It is suggested that any data that you wish
to save is copied to a second card or other data storage medium before
carrying out this process.

1. Boot the computer normally, connect the SD Card reader if necessary and
insert the SD card as described in its manual.

2. Take note of the drive letter which windows has asigned to the SD card,
you will need this later:

A. In some cases, a dialog box will appear asking what action you would like
Windows to take. If this occurs, the asigned drive letter is shown here.
You must then choose the "Take No Action" option to close this box.

B. If this does not occur, open My Computer.

I. Press WINDOWS+M to minimise all active windows, thus placing focus on the
desktop.

II. Navigate to the My Computer icon and press ENTER.

III. If a My Computer icon cannot be found, press WINDOWS+R to invoke the
Run dialog and type
...
(that is, three periods), then press ENTER.

IV. If step III above fails to open My Computer, repeatedly press BACKSPACE
until My Computer is shown in the Title Bar.

C. Once My Computer is open, navigate to the item in the list associated
with your SD card.

D. The asigned drive letter is shown in this item. Take note of it and
close My Computer.

3. Press WINDOWS+R to invoke the Run dialog, type
format {SD Card Drive Letter}: /fs:fat
(E.G.
format F: /fs:fat
), then press ENTER.

4. You should then be placed in a DOS Box window and asked to insert a new
disk in the asigned drive. Press ENTER.

5. A number of lines of text, showing status information, should then be
displayed. After a few minutes you should be asked for the volume label.
Press ENTER.

6. A summary will then display and the DOS Box window should close
automatically. If it does not, type
exit
, then press ENTER.

7. In a web browser, visit
www.humanware.com
, locate the page containing the download for your particular version of
KeySoft and browse to it. For example, if your BrailleNote currently runs
KeySoft 7.2, browse to the KeySoft 7.2 upgrade page.

8.  On the resulting page, search for the link that reads "KeySoft {Version}
MPower Download", (E.G. "KeySoft 7.2 MPower Download"), and activate it.

9. If asked, choose to Save/Download (or similar) the file.

10. In the resulting dialog box, choose to save the file to your SD card.
The file should be called nk.bin - if it is not, either you have
accidentally typed text into the File Name edit box or you have activated
the wrong link, please check this before continuing and correct if
necessary.

11. The file should begin downloading to the SD card. The file size should
be approximately 40 MB - if it is not, you have activated the wrong link,
please cancel the download and repeat this process from step 8.

12. Once the file has successfully downloaded to the SD card, remove it
from the card reader and insert it into your BrailleNote.

13. Ensure that your BrailleNote is connected to its charger, that the
charger is connected to a plug socket at the wal and that this plug socket
at the wall is switched on.

14. Hold down dots 4 and 5. Whilst doing this, hold down the record button
and press reset, then release both buttons. Your BrailleNote should beep,
after which you should immediately release dots 4 and 5.

15. Your BrailleNote should now try to reload KeySoft into ROM from the
nk.bin file on the SD card; in escense, upgrade to the same version (E.G.
upgrade from KeySoft 7.2 to KeySoft 7.2). This process should take several
minutes; if it does not, the reload process has failed.

16. After several minutes, the firmware reload process should complete and
KeySoft should start normally. If it does not, the process was
unsuccessful.
