Neither the Saudi's nor U.S. oil interests wanted to see a close working relationship between a prominent EU member (France) and the nations with proven oil reserves of 60 BBL (Russia) and 115 BBL (Iraq). This takes on added significance when combined with the fact that the Saudis have some $200 B invested in the U.S.
