Hi Simon

Nice to hear from you. Do let me know if you had any thoughts or comments
about my response to your queries about Nationals when you have a moment.

Anyway - it sounds like you were unaware of the changes we made to
membership during 2012 although we did make a number of attempts to
advertise the issue. I won't repeat all the arguments here - please take a
look at this link for the details.

**************************
We do NOT intend to send Ultimatum 2012 to people who have not yet renewed
and it is absolutely our intention that this will be the case going
forwards. On your behalf we have good reasons for wanting members to renew
their membership annually on a fixed date, and we have selected *** 30th
Sept/1st Oct *** as the most appropriate date. Whilst it is more accident
than design, we do see Ultimatum providing us with an extra
reminder/incentive for people in the November-January period. No apology.
We are doing the right thing for the structure of the sport and the
organisation.

As far as the shortened membership year 2012, I am also slightly
uncomfortable that a small number of individuals who do not want to renew
for 2012-13 (because they are retiring or leaving the country) will not
receive an Ultimatum 2012. Unfortunately we cannot identify them as
different from people who are renewing late (yes - late), but we've added a
note to the website to encourage those people to contact us if they are not
renewing for 2012-13.
**************************

I am going to pick up a couple of points from your email - and then I will
reply to your second email ...

1. "a batch email to those whos is to run out is automatically sent out one
month before membership runs out easy peasy!!"

So - we did do that on the moving-date-renewal method - but many people
ignored the reminder.
Also - we did send those reminders as everyone's membership expired in at
the end of September. Since this would have included you, and yet you're
only raising your concerns now, I think I contest the idea that the
automated reminder is a catch-all solution to people having
personalised-renewal-dates. My experience of the last 4-5 years is that
categorically these reminders do NOT work.

2. "Why can't the UKU[A* - see below] have a rolling twelve month membership
like other national organisations?

Well actually when considering whether to return to a fixed renewal date I
did some looking into this and the reality is different NGBs take different
approaches to this. Many do use a fixed renewal date. I must say - having
tried both - I am very confident that fixed date is better for us - some of
the reasons are outlined in the note on the website.

One example is netball. They have 75,000 members and estimate 1 million
people play netball every week. They remain predominantly a participation
sport (so a better established NGB to compare with than, say, the FA or
LTA). They run a fixed renewal date for their membership scheme. Its 1st
Sept if you're interested.

3. "the UKUA"

This seems like an opportunity to remind people that the organisation is
"UKU" not "UKUA". I appreciate that we haven't invested lots of time and
your money into a very overt re-branding exercise, but actually the UKUA
changed its structure and name in 2008 to become UK Ultimate Ltd. So "UKU",
not "UKUA" please. This means that our organisation is a legal entity in
its own right, and reduces the potential financial risks to individuals that
are board members, committee members or other officers of the organisation.

Thanks

Si

Subject: [BD] Ultimatum 2012

So people who paid for membership in 2012 don't get 2012's Ultimatum, so do
they get 2011's? As I joined before tour this year, and didn't get one from
last year sent to me.

Personally will be p****d off that a person who joins now for next season
gets this years ultimatum and if I don't dip my hand in my pocket today and
wait till next year don't get one even though paid for this years
membership, and presumed to be getting one as was part of the membership of
the UKUA!! Crazy!!

Think this needs sorting out so those that have already paid for 2012's
membership get their copy!!

Why can't the UKUA have a rolling twelve month membership like other
national organisations? So if sign up in may it lasts till may the following
year, a batch email to those whos is to run out is automatically sent out
one month before membership runs out easy peasy!!

Kind regards
Simon Barlow
