I can see why you did that now! I hadn't appriciated just how close to the original bottom cill the water was when empty. It's a pitty they didn't remove it when they lengthed the lock. It would mean that even if you had a shorter deep boat, before they lengthed it you would not get through. In fact with that in mind they prehaps should have lengthed it to original length + 70ft which would be fairly cheap to do while they were lengthening the lock in the first place.
