I think the best advice is "Don't do it". It is actually very risky. If you are alone at the lock, and something happens to you (a rope tightens around your leg; you slip and fall into the empty lock; you fall in the full lock at the back of your boat while your boat is running in gear; etc. etc.). You could be seriously injured, or simply trapped, and no-one is around to help. Yes, I do do it sometimes, but now I try hard to avoid it. Adrian Adrian Stott 07956-299966
