I am surprised that this has been sent out as a press release this week. You could have read it all (and more) on June 12th on Pennine Waterways http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/news/canalstreet2.htm Narrowboatworld.com got completely the wrong end of the stick with this press release with a report headed "Boaters win the day". I don't think boaters have won anything but are about to lose a slice of history when it becomes impossible to access Lock 86 by the current method. All the improvements will do is to make Lock 86 safer to use than it is now for boaters accessing the lock from their boats. It misses the point that many people want to send a crew member ahead to set locks and the proposed fencing alongside the canal will make access to the lock by foot difficult and dangerous. It also misses the point that the head of Lock 87 remains unsafe for many boaters to access from their boats, which they will have to do if there is no land access to or from Lock 86. The original story behind this is here: http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk/news/canalstreet.htm -- Martin Clark Pennine Waterways Website http://www.penninewaterways.co.uk
