My PO had a nifty, but simple solution for those fingers of yours!  He had a
nylon line tied to the stern pulpit and the other end had the "U" portion of
a shackle tied at the screw hole.  When you put the hatch up just hook the
lip of the hatch in the shackle and it stays there until you release it.  So
low tech it is maybe the smartest thing he did.
