When I replace mine I but a little bit of thread (like sewing thread)  around 
where the ring goes.  I put the thread through the impeller then  push the 
impeller on.  When its on I pull the shaft out a little (just a  little) with 
the thread and then remove the tread.  I then put the  ring on.  No problems 
done 1-2-3.   Have to make sure that all  the tread is removed.  
I also tie the impeller fins down with a plastic tie and put vasiline  on the 
whole impeller.  As the impeller is slid onto the shaft, the plastic  tie 
slides off, and the fins are facing in the right direction inside the the  
impeller shaft.
