Hah!

OK, I might have miscalculated on that...but let's present the situation where an unreefed main is
hoisted in 45 degree air (colder is denser) on a day blowing 18-20.

You engineers can calculate the load, I cant, on 150 sq feet of material...a lot of that load is going to be offset by the boltrope and the mast, the boom, the mainsheet, vang and cunningham, right? But a buttload is going to be yanking on that halyard...maybe not 900 pounds (900 is 30%, not 1000...which is 33.333333333333 percent)

If you've ever tried to get another inch of halyard tension on a fully loaded main in 20 kn you know that that puppy is LOADED....you'll need a winch and you'll need to luff up....so I dont think 600-900 way off base, do you? Probably
will never know w/o attaching a load cell to the halyard and mainsail head.

But OK, I'll grant you 2% times 600 inches....still 7 inches of bungy cord effect.

ugh.

TF,

Not to be argumentative or a Nasty A**..

But do you really put a Main Halyard under 1000 pounds of load ? (StaSet specs say Over 3000 lbs tensile)
How do you do that ?
I doubt if I can get more than half that.
I'd really like to know..

So say....IF...at 1.5 % under 15% percent tensile.. wouldn't StaSet have a lot less stretch ?

Is good ?

While I do agree Sta-Set is perfectly adequate, I wouldn't recommend it for approx. 30+ feet of halyard hoist, even if I were just cruising the boat. The percent of elongation with Sta Set is (I think) about 3.6 percent under a 30% tensile strength load....that translates into 13 - 14 inches of stretch, even more when the main is reefed. So, every time the sail loads up in a puff the draft goes aft, the sail becomes more powerful and you have less control of the boat when you need it most.

Drop your halyard 12 inches one day when it's blowing 20+ and see what it does to your main's shape and your helm's feel...you might feel differently about Sta-Set after that.

I just sayin' is all...
