This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of March 14 , 2010 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE ROSS’S GOOSE EURASIAN WIGEON WHITE-WINGED SCOTER OSPREY MERLIN SANDHILL CRANE GREATER YELLOWLEGS LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL EASTERN PHOEBE NORTHERN SHRIKE FISH CROW TREE SWALLOW TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE PINE WARBLER EASTERN MEADOWLARK PINE SISKIN
Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 3/15: 2 EURASIAN WIGEON and 1 ROSS’S GOOSE were spotted in the mucklands on Rt.31. 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen from VanDyne Spoor Road at dusk. 3/16: 1 EURASIAN WIGEON was seen in the mucklands.A NORTHERN SHRIKE and 3 SANDHILL CRANES were seen from VanDyne Spoor Road. 3/17: A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen in Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 3/18: 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at VanDyne Spoor Road. A FOS GREATER YELLOWLEGS was seen at the Visitor’s Center 3/19: 1 EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on Morgan Road near the DEC buildings. 3/21: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in the marsh on Railroad Road. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Tschache Pool. Derby Hill ------------ 2201 raptors were counted this week. The first OSPREY was seen on 3/19. SANDHILL CRANES were seen on 3/15 and 3/17. The FOS EASTERN PHOEBE was seen on 3/15. Oswego County ------------ 3/16: The FOS TREE SWALLOWS (15) were seen on Rt. 3 near the Salmon River at Port Ontario. 3/19: A PINE WARBLER was spotted at a feeder in Constantia but it is believed to be a bird that overwintered and not a migrant since it had been seen previously this winter. 3/20: A RED-THROATED LOON was spotted in Oswego Harbor. Also seen among the usual waterfowl were WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. 3/21: 2 PINE SISKINS were at a feeder in Hastings Onondaga County ------------ 3/18: FOS EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen in Tully and on Fenner Road in Lysander. 3/20: A MERLIN was spotted on Cardener Road in southeast Onondaga County. Cayuga County ------------ 3/19 : The FOS Region 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS was seen on Towpath Road in Port Byron. Jefferson County ------------ 2/20: Another positive sighting on the Point Peninsula TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE was made in the same general area as before but somewhat closer to the Co. Rt. 57 intersection with State Park Road than previously reported. Extralimital ------------ Lewis's Woodpecker in Ontario County, NY The Lewis's Woodpecker arrived October 30, 2010. Up to now over 200 people have seen the bird by word of mouth. We would like to let others that have not heard about this bird the opportunity to see him if they wish.
