I read up on the security holes in windows and IIS, I patch what I can, I
close what holes are open. I learn and I want to learn. Even with using
Windows, I take responsability for myself. Is that to much to ask people to
do? Learn before you enter the net. Pick up your garbage rather than
throwing it on the street. Cover your mouth when you cough. You know, little
things of personal reponsability.
I don't hold my self as elite for knowing how things work.


But lets bring this all back to the original comment here. I dislike the
Fire*** because they put a nice, iconic front end on a browser/mail reader
with limited functionality (compaired to it's big brother mozilla) so that
people can use the products without worry or even knowledge. Yes,
knowledgeable people use the products because they're also good, but they're
designed to make it easy for end users. They allow people without knowledge
to stay without knowledge and still use the net. But this is not about the
products, it's about the users.
Did I say that people should know how to repair a car engine? No. I don't
expect end users to write code either. But you do need a license to drive
and I feel that a license or at least some knowledge is needed to use the
net.

Michael, you have the ability to learn about and use a more secure Operating
system, but you probably still use Windows don't you?  Have you tried to
manipulate the Windows code so that your machine will be more secure?
There's a certain level of trust people put into things.  When you drive a
car, you don't necessarily have to know how the engine works, you implicitly
trust that it will work.  This is the same thing that's happening with
"normal" users.  The computer isn't much more than really complicated remote
control or some other common gadget.  This isn't their fault though.  I
blame MS.  They market WinXP to look and feel very simple.  A consumer OS
shouldn't require all of the maintenance that WinXP requires.  

I think you have an elitist attitude towards end users, but I'm sure that
the people who create cars, Tivos, iPods, cell phones, etc all have similar
attitudes.
