Yeah... ain't it a shame.

My troop (good old 580 in Tonawanda, NY) was actually quite open and
respectful. We learned good things like "leave places better than you found
them". We didn't enforce religious or sexual exclusion policies and in
general focused more on the teamwork and respect for nature aspects.

But when we'd go out and interact with (some) other troops you could see the
other-side. Some troops were nothing more than weekend jag-offs (when the
scoutmasters bring a keg to the camp-site you know there's not much good
coming out of it) and others were zealots (prayer time and anti-gay
propaganda).

I served as advisor to a cub troop and was senior patrol leader for my troop
(but I never did make Eagle... I had everything I needed but was too much of
a fat bastard to get my physical fitness badge).

Now that my son is six I'm honestly torn about it. I would love him to have
memories like mine but it just doesn't seem the same anymore. (If it was
really the same then... or I just lucked out and found a good troop.)
