I've never done this, but this is what I'm told by a friend who has done
this to a number of people. My favorite prank was when he put it in a
paper bag and knocked on the door -- the person didn't know what it was,
so just tossed it in the trash. A few hours later.....

> 1. Shaving cream or shaving gel? Does it make a difference?

Cream, not gel. Gel only gets about 2x as big. You'll get between 8x
and 10x expansion from cream -- enough to fill a medium-sized drawer or
half an office-sized trash can.

> 2. Is there some kind of bladder in the can that I have to worry about?

Generally, no. There's a seal along the seams, but it's not a big deal.

> 3. Cutting all the metal off from a pressurized can, frozen or not,
> still kinda scares me. I fear being the next recipient of a Darwin Award.

If possible, get a can of foam with the little black safety stopper in
the bottom of the can. Pull that out. It releases what pressure is in
there, plus gives you a good place to start cutting on the metal. Wear
work gloves of thick leather. Before starting, try to spray some out
the nozzle to make sure it's completely frozen.

Also, if you do this in the summer, do it in an air-conditioned place
with lots of newspaper or the like spread, as the surface will tend to
thaw before you're done. Put the frozen cream into a ziplock and place
back in the freezer until it's time to prank. Don't wait too long,
though, or the outgassing will start to reduce the size of your bomb.

Hope that helps.
