> MS Encarta, what would your figures be?

OK Nick,

You have misrepresented your source. I've found your Encarta reference and
your figures where drawn not from the death toll but from the people
INVOLVED in the war. For reference, here is the paragraph:

Your reference. People involved . Not killed
This is from Encarta
-----------------
"World War II's basic statistics qualify it as by far the greatest war in
history in terms of human and material resources expended. In all, 61
countries with 1.7 billion people, three quarters of the world's population,
took part. A total of 110 million people were mobilized for military
service, more than half of those by the USSR (22-30 million), Germany (17
million), and the United States (16 million). The largest numbers of
active-duty personnel at any one time were: USSR 12,500,000; the United
States 12,245,000; Germany 10,938,000; British Empire 8,720,000; Japan
7,193,000; and China 5,000,000."

My Figures:
-----------------
My figures are the average from a number of sources.
This list below estimated military dead.

According to Britannica.com

Major countries:
Soviet Union: 11,000,000
Germany: 3,500,000
China: 1,310,224
Japan: 1,300,000
British Commonwealth: 373,372
Yugoslavia: 305,000
Romania: 300,000
United States: 292,131
United Kingdom: 264,443
Italy: 242,232
France: 213,324
Hungary: 200,000
Poland: 123,178
Finland: 82,000

Also from Britannica a note of total figures:
"There are no reliable figures for the casualties of the Soviet Union and
China, the two countries in which casualties were undoubtedly greatest.
Mainly for this reason, estimates of total dead in World War II vary
anywhere from 35,000,000 to 60,000,000-a statistical difference of no small
import"

Separately in the civilian casualties list roughly 5,700,000 Jews were
killed... mostly from Poland.

It's important to get this information correct.
So saying for example that 16 Millions Americans died is WW2 is completely
inaccurate. The US military death toll was closer to 270,000 (for which I
apologise... my earlier post suggested 500,000).

Benjamin
