In his case his mind is perfect (a little forgetful) but he's effectively deaf (due to shingles which broke his ear drums), macular degeneration has all but taken his sight and arthritis means he can't feel anything with his hands. The point isn't that you want somebody to die, it's more like you don't want to see somebody you love replaced with somebody they'd be ashamed of. There's also going to be a selfishness (it would be easier for you if...) but that's nothing to be ashamed of.
