First I would wonder if that store has any tiles similar.   Could be
that an employee pulled the drive and then put some tiles in there.
The weight doesn't have to be close, just not empty.  It's not like
he's Indiana Jones grabbing the gold idol  :)

2nd, it seems pretty odd that the guy would risk a $300 scam by going
public, and why would he return it and say he found tiles?  Why not
just put an old HD in there?  99% of the time employees don't check or
know.  It seems like a lot of stupid trouble to go through for $300.
Why not just put an old drive in there and say it doesn't work?

To me it sounds nutty enough to be true.  My guess is that an employee
or an employee's friend did it.
