1. While some police forces require either an associates OR military service, the majority do not. May don't even require a high school diploma. For a while before I got into coding on a serious level that was going to be my post military job. I have a GED and a minor criminal history and it wasn't a problem for any of the police forces I applied to (Maine, NYC, Nassau County NY, AZ).
2. Commissioned officers in our military have the least contact with firearms, many only carrying a sidearm (pistol not rifle or a machine gun) when directly in a war zone, and only qualifying yearly, and even then I've seen them just put in the paper for the qual without hitting the range.
