Well - you might very well get a refurb. It's really up to them whether to
send you a new one or fix the old one.

I was actually kind of lucky this time since I was replacing a "core" system
and they don't actually make them any longer - so I got an "Arcade" system
in exchange. No biggie, but now I have an HDMI port and a memory card that
I didn't have before... I'll look at the silver lining. ;^)

It's anecdotal but I only know three people around here with them and one of
them has had two failures, another one failure and the last one (a 12 year
old kid) none.

It really does seem, to me, like the problems are centered on thermal
failure: all the failures that I know about occurred after multi-hour
sessions (while playing a great game). I think since that 12 year old isn't
allowed to play more than an hour a day he's pretty safe.

But every time something new comes out I dread it. I save constantly and
every little twitch and fan noise hits my nerves. Gaming shouldn't be
nerve-wracking in that way! I can't really argue that the PS3 has better
games, but I defiantly feel more comfortable/confident playing it.

There's a "falcon" chipset out that uses a smaller die size and so lots less
power (and so lots less heat) but I'm not sure how to tell if you've got one
or not. I'm sure there's some way to decode the serial-number to tell, but
I've not tried yet.
