The best argument is that that passage was drafted by Jefferson and edited by Franklin - who were Deists! * Jefferson, as president, rarely attended church services and was famously not a member of any Christian church. Further, in a letter to John Adams, Jefferson specifically named Conyers Middleton, a Deist, "... as the basis of my own faith." * Franklin wrote, "I soon became a thorough Deist" in his autobiography. So, did the nation's founders create a "Christian nation"? NO! The USA was created with freedom of religion by many Christians.
