Hasn't slowed down at all for me yet. And you are right, browsers crash even Firefox when something gets hung up in one page. Hasn't happened so far with Google.
What one has to wonder though, is why hasn't Microsoft with its numerous iterations, and pending IE 8, ripped out the guts and gone from the ground up the way this Google version has done?
