There are several reasons this race is still close, and they all have to do
with John McCain:

1) McCain is running like he's McCain the independent, (the man I would've
voted for) he's not, he's flip-flopped (again) and become McCain the
Republican, with Palin as a throw away to satisfy the ultra right wing special
interests.
2) McCain has more times than not voted with the status quo, in this case,
George Bush II, People are wondering if they can trust the US to his
stewardship, especially in a time of crisis.
3)McCain has surrounded himself in the past with questionable people - the
Keating 5, Council for World Freedom
(http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1848122,00.html),Oliver North
4. Some people will vote for him on the basis of his race. It's ugly, but there
it is.

this entire commentary can be flipped either way, it's a close race because you
have two candidates who are more alike than they are different, they're barking
up two sides of the same tree. And they'll both get the same amount done in
Washington..... nothing.
