Such people operate with a worldview that is zero-sum. If [insert undesirable group here] gets more rights, I will have fewer rights. If a middle class emerges in China, the middle class in the USA will recede. Etc. etc. etc.
People do weird things when they're afraid of losing something of value. Factor in the prospect of their kids losing something of value and the fear increases exponentially.
