Yeah the standard for criminal complaints is beyond a reasonable doubt. For civil, it's a preponderance of evidence. Thus MJ was found not guilty because the criminal trial jury found a reasonable doubt as to his guilt. Much like corporations who settle civil legal issues to avoid the cost and publicity (*cough* Microsoft), MJ settled with the accusers to avoid the cost and hassle of the trial.
