Type 1 _used_ to be referred to as Juvenile Diabetes - but no longer.

It is an autoimmune disease.

It accounts for about 12% of diabetes cases, and they now think it may be a
factor in more (as many as 20% where people have both Type 1 and Type 2, the
Type 2 being aggravated by weight gain caused by uncontrolled Type 1, or by
other mechanisms, like LADA).
