Who says determined and courageous people don't/can't do stupid things? > > >> I do not presume that those who want to build this center are doing so >> for anything other than altruistic reasons, its the other people >> around them, that could cause problems, that makes it a dumb idea. >> > > That seems like a bit of a stretch, but OK. > > I don't think it's a dumb idea at all, personally, and if draws some of the > more idiotic bigots out from under their rocks to cause trouble...so be it. > May they be arrested and put on display for all Americans to see just how > ugly they are. I'd like to think I am not a bigot, so its difficult for me to figure out how they tick. Sadly, I think most Americans know how ugly they can be, most just don't seem to give a shit enough to do anything about it. For some reason, this reminded of something that happened shortly after 9/11. I was working on a medic unit in Lakewood, NJ. This unit;s office was in a small 'office park' There were a few small stores, some doctor;s offices, some lawyers offices and one office was occupied by a Muslim organization (though I cannot recall the exact name). During a night shift the week after 9/11, we returned from a call and saw a few people 'sneaking' around the building, near the back door of the Muslim office space. Thinking they may be trying to vandalize the office, my partner and I parked near where they were walking to find out what they were doing. Turns out that they were from the Muslim office space and where 'sneaking' out the back door because in the week or so since 9/11 they had received several death threats at the office and were afraid to use the front door to come and go. I would be lying if I said that once we saw they were Muslim (which was fairly obvious from the way they were dressed) I did not think they were up to something. It kind of saddens me that I had that thought, regardless of how fleeting. We spent about an hour talking with the men, about 9/11 and other things ( I asked them a lot about their religion as I had never had the opportunity to learn about Islam form someone who actually practiced the religion). One thing was abundantly clear to me after about 5 minutes, these guys were just as appalled and angry, maybe even more so, by the attacks than just about everyone else I knew. Over the next few weeks, we (the EMS staff) kept an eye on the place at night, since we were the only ones there 24/7 and a few times we did see people trying to break in or vandalize their office (and our office and some personal vehicles got vandalized as well). Sadly, after about 3 months of the same bullshit, they moved their office to a new building in a different part of the county. Its a shame, I really enjoyed talking to them and getting such a different perspective on things. > > -- > No matter how close to yours another's steps have grown > In the end there is one dance you'll do alone > > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology-Michael-Dinowitz/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/message.cfm/messageid:325250 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-community/unsubscribe.cfm
