MJ was a Motown artist. All of the Motown music is considered a sub-class of rock. I agree. James Jamerson, who played bass on most of the Motown stuff is also in the Hall is a sideman. He had more influence on rock bass players than just about anyone ever.
MJ was a much a rock artist as Chuck Berry or Little Richard (whose act he copped). Ask any rock band if they weren't influenced by Chuck Berry.
