He really gains nothing from it. If anything it hurts him.

The teahadis who are mostly against same sex marriage are not going to
vote for him anyhow. Those on the left will probably vote for him
regardless, what other choice do they have. It will cost him with a
lot of conservative black voters though. They are not going to vote
for Mittens, but they most likely will just stay home in November.
