Most troops aren't even near to being killers man. They are clerks and programmers and commo guys that learn to shoot a gun and quickly forget all about that.
The military is something like 2% combat arms and SOF. I agree about religion, as far as I'm concerned organized religion has caused as much evil in the world as anything short of communism and fascism. Maybe more. As to the "can't we all just get along" portion of your speech, well, no we can't. The reality is that we all need resources, land and water and fuel. The reality is that we all have differing ideologies and religious beliefs and they are often incompatible. It would be great if we could get a do over and all start from the same point with the same resources, but that just isn't realistic. Criminals exist. People that want to hurt, rape, plunder and kill are very real. This is very much one aspect of our human nature, one I hate, but it is there.
