Those are just weird.

Fortunately, my current cat was trainable and doesn't scratch anything but
her post so she gets to keep her claws. I grew up with declawed cats, and
they were quite happy. They were declawed for almost the same reason as what
happened to your sister. Except that it happened to me. Incredibly even
after declawed they were indoor/outdoor cats that would catch flying birds,
fight off other animals, and climb trees.
