So, if you had a cat that thought it was playing, but got it's claws out
all of the time and nearly caused you some serious harm (say a deep
scratch right by your eye), you would rather put the cat down than have
it de-clawed?

It'd be the only other alternative... And seems a LOT less humane than
de-clawing
