Self defense is not acceptable everywhere in the world. Massachusetts, until several years ago, was a "flee your home" state. Which meant that if someone broke into your home, you were obligated by law to leave the premises. Confronting the intruder would get you jail time. And I believe Britain is burdened with anti-self defense laws that will get you jail time for using violence to stop violence against yourself.
I live in the Gunshine State(tm). The rumors of blood flowing in the streets has been greatly exagerated. Although I continue to hope. We have CCW, the Castle Doctrine, Samaritan protection laws, and a law that keeps criminals from suing their victims for damages that occur from stopping the crime.
