There have been various court cases where people used lethal force to
protect themselves from attackers, and were aquitted from any wrongdoing, so
there is tort law precedence.  Not sure if there's anything explicitly
stated in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms about being able to kick
someone in the nads when necessary :)

To purchase a firearm in Alberta, you go buy the firearm.  I did have a
friend who owned a magnum, and he had to keep it in a safe, and the ammo had
to be stored somewhere else.
