I do not agree. I have seen applications done in ASP or others just as fast
as with CF and now with .NET even faster. So if you know you can design the
application in ASP in the same amount of time you could do it in CF then the
client would most likely pick the path that does not include the purchase of
server software.


This is the job of the PM to sit down with the developers and work out if
the job should be done in whatever language is best suited for the project.
So it can go both ways

While I agree with this comment, I also disagree with it.. :) because if
that company would have had it explained (correctly) that it will take HALF
the time to develop it in ColdFusion.. then they would realize that they are
saving the cost of the CF server almost instantly.

Most people that do comparisons of CF to other free languages (.NET, PHP)
tend to leave that part out.. CF is the fastest development language there
is.. Not to mention that while it costs money it beings many different tools
(VERITY,CHARTING,ETC) built in so no additional costs will be incurred by
that company and yes... things do get done faster.. which means less expense
for the company in the end.. Therefore buying the server should be NO big
deal.
