Unfortunately our industry (I think more than most) is plagued by posers. I
know that's a bit harsh but even watching this list I've seen people post
who have applied for jobs at my company and been shown the door. There's a
good article in the CF Tech Article section at allaire.com called something
along the lines of "My brother-in-law does websites", it's a good read.
That's a very common theme, in any industry, the professional people who
have honed their skills taken classes and such have to contend with people
who work from their bedrooms and call themselves professionals, who flood
the market and cast a bad light on the industry as a whole.

That being said (just a gripe I've had for a long time :-))

I work for a technical recruiting firm in CA (offices Nationwide.... sorry
shameless plug but marketing would kill me if I didn't, at least once) and
the recruiters here (I'm on the web team, I'm not a recruiter, don't worry
LOL) tell me that there is always a slow down the months immediately
preceding the end of the year. i.e. October through January. Primarily
because most IT departments and companies get new budgets in January so they
don't hire much until then.

Regarding the dot-com washout and all. You're right I think in general work
will get more scarce (I think mostly for those of the lesser skillset, kind
of a "cream rising to the top" thing) because of all these consulting firms
and web shops that are also getting caught up in the wash.

Well ok I feel a lot better now :-)

Hopefully that helps or doesn't or whatever..

Subject: Net Tanking?

If you read f*ckedcompany.com, news.com, or just about anything else, you've
read about dotcom after dotcom going in the tank. I used to feel confident
that I could get another CF job -- a better paying CF job -- at a moment's
notice. However, I've lost that feeling very quickly in the last couple
months.

Has anyone noticed a slowdown in hiring good CF people (or any other web
developer, for that matter)? Of course there will always be a need for good
coders, but if there are a _lot_ of them looking for work, wages will go
down.

Am I just extra paranoid right now or does anyone else have a negative "gut
feeling" as well?

 Jay
