Well, heat would be a far bigger problem than cold for most devices -
biggest problem in the cold is moisture from condensation - which can
also occur in warmer climates - but from what I remember of the Old
Homeplace - well, Hades has nuthin on GA in the summer - and the kinds
of temps you could find in a closed box attached to a pole in direct
sunlight can trivially make a lot of routers lock up tight... check the
chip specs and do the C to F conversions before you climb the pole. I
think the Slashdot commentary talked a bit about temperature monitoring
of the h/w and e.g. putting a "weatherproof" cooling fan in such a box...

No doubt.

If one could get the current requirement for the device down as low as
e.g. my cheapo Nokia 1100 cell phone it would be such a problem - this
thing will run for quite a few hours (talk time) off a tiny battery that
charges really quickly - just get a bunch of those batteries and gang
'em togther would be a good starting point, imo. You could charge them
from the cigarette lighter.

Well, battery life is a bit different that charging capacity - I've been
talking mostly about what you can expect from the system while the
engine is running and there is current flowing from the alternator. The
battery itself is a related, but nastier, problem. I typically expect
the battery to just drop dead immeadiately if there's anything plugged
in when the engine is off - basically, all batteries are crap and serve
only as big, ugly UPS units to allow a graceful shutdown of the systems
when the power goes off ... that's an oversimplififcation, but ...

Yes. Car batteries are not designed for that. What you want is golf
cart batteries. They look the same as car batteries, but they are
different - I think you can charge them with the same (or similar)
chargers, though. Some about them being "deep cycle" batteries, iirc -
they (golf cart batteries) are better even that boat ("marine")
batteries for repeated deep discharge/charge cycles...

Yeah - most of the WiFi stuff is pretty low power execpt by laptop/PDA
battery standards - and those batteries are worse crap than car
batteries, imo.

Cool.

Yeah - I've got a Balance laptop (rebranded ECS Walmart cheapo) that
brings my 90W inverter to its knees just powering up - the damn thing
(inverter) literally just starts screaming and doesn't stop until I
disconnect the laptop - It works okay on the 400W inverter, though...
I'm pretty sure that one is a 2600 or 2800 AMD - would have to check. I
think it's not a "mobile" processor - even though it's in a laptop - the
Vaio, otoh, works fine on the 90W inverter, even w/ wireless card active...

Hey! You hurt my feelings - my *new* car is a 1995 - I'm going to hotrod
the old one... I can't recall the name of the alternator place - I went
there qiute a few times to get alternators back in the day, though - I
believe they were doing the winding onsite, so they could probably give
you a custom job if you talk to them right... that's a long time ago,
though - back when alternators ran $25 or $30 before the core charge... ;)
