There was a design for one of these on slashdot.org about a year or two ago - might be findable with a bit of searching - it's also probably commercially available by now. The design they discussed there used PoE, iirc, was weather-tight, and proved to be sufficiently temperature tolerant to work - I think it was an SBC with WiFi devices connected to USB ports, but don't hold me to that... It was not (again, iirc) a repackaaged commercial router (due to cost, I believe). > As for running a router in your car, how do you plan on powering it? I > hope not by your battery. Actually, I would think a car battery would be just fine for running a router - at least while the car is running. If you want to run it whle the car is shut off, you might want to install some extra batteries and jazz up the charging system with a switching regulator like those used in RVs... > I run an inverter with psone 5 inch lcd modded and a way overpowered > computer with gps and a 200mw senao card : \ and have problems with the > inverter overloading due to voltage dropping too low coming from the > battery. I'd be interested in the specs on that, if you have them, since I'm betting it's way lower power than a laptop VGA display - It sounds like you're power hog is the processor, but I guess you knew that... > It's a 16 year old car though, so you might have better results if you > have something with a bigger alternator and battery. Yeah - I would bet the older cars have more robust charging systems, generally - and you can usually get a "heavy duty" alternator - there's a place that rebuilds alternators there in columbus, you might want to talk to them about it. You should be able to get a few hundred watts out of it pretty easily while the engine is running, I would think. The other consideration about vehicle power gear that I've run into is that gas engines are not designed to idle for extended periods (overheating? waste build-up?). Diesels are supposed to be generally better for this. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "CHAOS706.ORG" group.
