There is a 3.73:1 'thin gear' available for use in GM 12 bolt series 4 carriers. I have the thin gear 3.73 in both my 12 bolt posi rears using the series 4 carriers This is the lowest numeric ratio that can be used with the GM 12 bolt series 4 carrier. If your desired ratio is lower than 3.73, you'll have to switch carriers. With a reasonably sized tire, (27" diameter with the 255's), plenty of torque with the 383 (450 ft/lbs), and an overdrive transmission, the 3.73's are awesome gear ratio.
