In his view, the BBC considerably edited what he had to say. In all things like this, you have to allow for the prejudices of the producers seeping in. Chris Bell's Churchill and the Dardanelles carefully explains, that was a fraught business from start to finish, and there was plenty of blame to go round. In my upcoming book Winston Churchill, Myth and Reality, I trace the historiography over the years and explain whose idea it was first (not WSC's), what alternatives were considered, and events that conspired against the operation. Nevertheless, said his friend, 'it was great to see Martin in his youth and vigor."
