Hi Kate, Just before i had my bone marrow transplant my blood typing was O+ and since my donor who was my donor was B+. She was a perfect HLA match except for her blood type. Since i was in blast crises and no other person was even a match to me and since i was dying, my transplant doctor decided to change my blood type from O to B. He told me that there were poor results from changing but i had no other choice.
I received 96 wholr blood transfusions along with dozens of platelet infusions plus a lot of other human blood products like gamma Globulin and a few others. So in essence i turned from O to B. There is a word for that. it is called Chimera which i am now after a successful transplant more then 27 years ago. But it didn't stop there. Twenty years later my kidneys went bad and i had to have dialysis for four years, and finally received a kidney transplant. Guess what the donor was a young man 20 years old and he had a fatal accident and his kidney matched me and even his blood type was B+.It is now exactly two years later and i am still alive. Now one last thing. Skip and i have been good friends for many years now and he will be going to another year with his blood transfusions so the way i figure it I had only 96 transfusions and no more after them, while Skip had probably thousands of blood transfusions, and more to come but my friend is still alive and so i am hands down on Skip having all of them. Skip holds the record. Have you ever seen that furry pink bunny on TV of that critter marching around beating his drum and always has power.
