Hi Mark, If you are going to use a smoke colored acrylic, you don't need to disguise the gelcoat damage with paint or anything else. The darker acrylic will hide the damage completely. I just faired the damaged gelcoat with and epoxy based fairing compound and sanded it flat. I applied the VHB tape over the faired gelcoat. and it adhered fine. I am into my second season with the new windows and they look terrific with no leaks. If you have the old windows off, you have the worst part behind you.
