Subject: Re: Stus-List Time for new halyard... Recommendations?

Based on the link below I've enjoyed Yale Crystalline and Sampson Walpspeed for
halyards. When I replaced my reef lines and outhauls I used a similar ideology
but was selecting based on color scheme more specifically than price or
performance and used Endura, V-100, and VPC. I have found all 5 lines to be
capable of a core ro core eye splice with a buried jacket tail.

I've chimed in before about eye splices near the masthead sheaves. IMO It
fattens the line too much and can cause jamming. Instead I use a Double
Overhand on Itself.

As for color schemes, consider this quote I found in online.

"I was taught (by an English race crew) that Mainsail controls are always
green, jib sails blue and spinnakers red. Halyards are solid colors and sheets,
outhauls etc. flecked or with tracers. (By following this convention, crews are
able to move from boat-to-boat without having to be re-educated.)"

I have found Crystalline to be one of the few solid color lines with great
price to performance characteristics so it is on as all my halyards right now.
Red for spin, blue for head, and green for main.

I suppose you are going to ask about size. 3/8ths for halyards gives 11,000lbs
strength. The crystalline jacket is slippery but clutches work fines and
whiches are fine except for the self tailer working loose. 5/16ths for the
outhaul and reef lines. This better accommodated the 3:1 and 5:1 purchase
systems in the boom and was slightly cheaper.

Hello all,

We have a 1994 C&C 37/40+. We've owned the boat for about a year. The
halyards are badly faded from the sun, and we noticed an area where the core is
showing at the eye splice around the shackles. The current halyards are
Sta-Set X.

We don't race, so super high-tech line is unnecessary, but that doesn't mean I
want have to re-tension the halyards when I'm sailing, either.

On my last boat (a C&C 27 MKIII), I tried the Sta-Set X 15 years ago or so, and
didn't like the feel, and I think I remember the line slipping in the clutches
as well. That has not been the case on this boat, but the line is old...

I've seen some recommendations for NE Ropes VPC.

What do you recommend for halyards and why?

Thanks!
