Hi Bill-  According to the USCG documentation site, the name and hailing port 
can be on the side or transom, but they have to be together.  Due to the fold 
down ladder on the back of my boat, i would have to slice letters and put part 
on one side of the gap and part on the other (that is how it was when I bought 
it).  I decided not to do that, so will do both sides.  Dave
