And what happens when (not if) you introduce a leak, and these objects
live longer than you expect them to? Or worse, someone else starts
holding on to these objects?

You're already using an -invalidate method. You just happened to call
it -dealloc. Why not follow good defensive programming practice and
make it explicit to save yourself future headaches?
