The remarks below indicate that not all housing on bases may be under Federal control or management...
Peace jeff : I was wondering if we had a base garden or compost? If not, is there any way we could do this? Many of us have small yards and cannot (due to rules) plant a large garden in our yards. It could help many families save money by growing their own produce, just a suggestion. Thank you for your suggestion to create a base garden. We commend your efforts to look for opportunities to improve the quality of life for Tyndall employees and residents. The privatized housing owner, Balfour Beatty Communities, does allow small vegetable gardens in fenced areas of yards with the stipulation that the garden is removed when the occupant vacates the residence. If a small garden in your yard does not suit your needs, Balfour Beatty also offers a wellness program called LifeWorks. According to their website (www.tyndallfamilyhousing.com), the LifeWorks program offers a variety of activities, seminars, and events to help residents get fit, challenge their minds, interact positively with others, and enrich their lives. Among these activities are social events that may include community picnics, craft classes or community gardens. We have discussed your idea for a community garden with Balfour Beatty and they are interested in further exploring the concept with residents. The LifeWorks coordinator at Balfour Beatty is Ms. Samantha Hilton. You can contact Ms. Hilton at 286-1700 to further discuss your interest in the community garden. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mike McGrath Sent: Saturday, February 07, 2009 10:58 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Community_garden] Interesting request--any 'military gardens' outthere? I just got the following email. Intriguing, eh? Does anybody out there know of any such inclinations or examples? Reply to me and I'll keep Nick in the loop... Hello Mike McGrath--I live in a condo, and therefore, cannot have a garden. However, I work for the Federal government, at the US Naval Observatory. They have plenty of good land to garden on. My question is this: Do you know of any government rules or initiatives that encourage community gardening on Federal land? I'd be willing to start a simple garden and donate 1/2 the crop to charity, and then keep the other 1/2 for myself or my fellow gardeners. The commander of the base is a very by the book sort of person, and I could get them to go along with a garden if there was a federal initiative encouraging gardening on federal lands. Thanks very much for reading this email.
